If you’re thinking about starting counselling in Canada, you probably have questions. That’s completely normal. Whether you’re considering in-person therapy or online counselling, here are the answers to the most common questions people ask.
1. How does counselling work?
Counselling provides a safe, confidential space to explore thoughts, emotions, and life challenges with a trained therapist. Sometimes you just need to process your thoughts, and sometimes you want help healing, and sometimes we just want an outsiders perspective. Whatever youre looking for, a counselor is there to listen.
2. Is online counselling effective?
Yes. Research shows online therapy in Canada can be just as effective as in-person therapy for anxiety, depression, stress, and relationship concerns.
3. What issues can counselling help with?

4. How much does therapy cost in Canada?
Fees vary depending on credentials and session length. The regular session fee is $89. Many extended health benefits cover counselling, but if you are not covered we also offer a sliding scale.
5. Is online therapy covered by insurance?
Most Canadian insurance plans reimburse sessions with registered professionals. Always confirm with your provider. But I am willing to meet you wherever you are at, to ensure you get the support you need.

7. How do I know if I need therapy?
If you’re feeling overwhelmed, stuck, or emotionally drained — therapy can help. You don’t need to be in crisis.
8. What happens in the first session?
Your first session focuses on your goals, getting to know you, and what you hope to gain from therapy.
9. How long does counselling take?
Most sessions are 1 hour (or 1.5) either weekly, biweekly or monthly. Some clients benefit from short-term therapy (6–8 sessions). Others prefer longer support.
10. What if I feel nervous about starting?
Feeling nervous is completely normal. A good therapist moves at your pace.
